My name’s Matt. I’m a husband, dad, and youth pastor. I’ve been plugging away in youth ministry for a decade and a half in four corners of the country. I’m getting a little gray and my students are kind enough to point that out. If I’m honest, there have been more struggles than outright victories but I love it. I’m a 1995 graduate of Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) where I played 4 years of lacrosse and earned a B.A. in Anthropology (in that order). I’m also a long-time, part-time student at Fuller Theological Seminary pursuing an M.Div. My wife Katie is a 1996 graduate of Miami University (Oxford, OH) where she earned a BS in Accounting and a 3-time graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary (MA Theology, MA Psychology, Doctorate in Clinical Psychology). We’re still paying it all off.
Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Young Life, Mariners Church, and currently Menlo Park Presbyterian Church are all places from which I’ve been privileged to draw a paycheck but of course ministry goes well beyond the job description. I’ve been blessed to work alongside and rub shoulders with some incredible people (from volunteers, parents and teachers to fellow youth workers and senior pastors) and count the many lessons learned and wisdom gleaned from those as priceless. The many mistakes have been all on me. And of course the students I’ve had the honor to know and work with, to share life, laughs, and tears, are what keep me coming back for more.
Through this blog, I hope to offer you insight, wisdom, and practical knowledge by sharing some thoughts I’ve picked up along the way.
Ministry is a challenging, sometimes frustrating, always fascinating daily journey as I’m in the constant process of learning what it means to follow Jesus and invite others along. I still can’t believe that I get to do this…
